Did you know that social media has been around for almost 40 years!! You can trace the first social media back to the 70's! Although it didn't really take off until around 30 years ago.

Over those years, social media has transformed dramatically which started as serving as a platform for those looking for connections and a form of communication, but now has become a very useful tool for businesses looking to promote and market their products, gain visibility, and most importantly sales!
Social media has been an incredible source of information for the public, from the tragic death of Caroline Flack in 2020, bringing on the quote ‘In a world where you can be anything, be kind’ to the very powerful ‘Me Too Movement” - social media has then been used a form of good to raise awareness of mental health and encouraged survivors to share their experience online. This movement on social media was especially important as it created almost a solidarity and support system for those who needed it most!

Over the past few years, there has been a global wave of protests and the very important Black Lives Matter movement in 2013, which created #BlackOutTuesday on social media. This was a very impactful time that raised a spotlight over the ongoing racism in society and so many users and celebrities got involved in sharing this on their channels.

As we know social media can be hugely used for politics, including the Brexit debate, with so many comments emerging in the lead-up to the big day! This raises the question - is social media the best place to raise these opinions or not? We will let you decide on that one!
Lastly, education! Social media can be so incredibly useful for educating, informing, and truly making a difference to all age ranges, and it should be used as a platform where it is safe and used with respect!

It's also important as a parent to ensure your child is staying saffe online.
Most importantly to conclude this, social media is a free tool, it should be used for good and good only. We have so much freedom these days to make a difference and everybody should be 100% entitled to their own opinion and to voice this, but we also need to be making sure that that opinion is backed up with the understanding that not everyone will agree!
